Set in Dindigul, an ancient city in southern Tamil Nadu known for its rich history and industrial prowess in textiles, locks, and agricultural machinery, the Yarn House is a striking residential project ornated by Vishwakarma Design Studio. With a built area of 28,000 sq ft, this residence was designed under the leadership of Karthikeyan Padmanabhan for a joint family deeply involved in the spinning and textile industry. The house is uniquely located within the family’s mill compound, serving as a private home and a communal space that brings the entire family together. With thoughtful design and spatial flow, the residence reflects the industrial and cultural heritage of Dindigul, while fostering a warm, connected living environment for its occupants.

The Principal Architect shares that since the client’s primary need was to create a space that served as a gathering space for the family, the design was intentionally inclusive while still catering to the individual needs of each member. Privacy was a key consideration, as the residence is located within the compound of their spinning and textile factory. The goal was to create a home immediately transporting them into a cosy and familiar environment upon entry. At the studio, our design inspiration draws from the environment and the history of the space we are designing. The Yarn House is an amalgamation of the client’s story and profession, Dindigul’s rich background, and our imagination.

The Yarn House is a sprawling, luxurious residence featuring five bedrooms, a home gym, and a pool, all seamlessly connected by communal spaces and gathering points. At the heart of the home lies a focal courtyard that floods the interiors with natural light throughout the day, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The design elements unify the spaces, blending a contemporary approach with traditional motifs and elements, giving the house a distinct character. Karthikeyan Padmanabhan, the principal architect and designer, is a man who lets his work speak for itself, and the Yarn House is a testament to his expertise. Every residence detail has been carefully considered, with each room designed to reflect a unique yet cohesive personality. The abundance of natural light and cross ventilation breathes life into the home, enhancing its spatial quality and providing a comfortable, vibrant living experience for its residents.

One of the standout features of the Yarn House is the intricate detailing on the garden walls. Custom granite murals were commissioned, featuring abstract floral motifs that bring depth and texture to the garden, making it a visually captivating space. The landscape design, crafted by Tamara Garden Centre, a renowned nursery and landscape platform based in Coimbatore, complements these artistic details perfectly. The design team extended the etched floral motifs across the property’s elevation, creating a cohesive aesthetic.

The entrance of this home exudes a grand yet serene aesthetic, marked by its wide columns adorned with intricate floral reliefs. A sloped roof and open ceiling add architectural interest, while the soft natural stone finish maintains a grounded elegance. The wooden main door, detailed with golden lotus motifs, creates a striking contrast and focal point. Together, these elements form an inviting, well-balanced composition that blends modern design with traditional symbolism.

The foyer, accessed through the courtyard, is elegantly highlighted with green 3d embossed decor while another wall is ornated with mirror artistic decor. It features a striking blue sofa and bench, complemented by a stylish crystal lighting fixture. The modern ceiling design enhances the space’s sophistication, creating a welcoming and visually captivating entrance.

The courtyard is the heart of the Yarn House, serving as the central design element around which the entire residence revolves. This space exemplifies a refined blend of textures and materials, highlighting the design studio’s precise attention to detail. Intricate wooden panelling, stone-etched custom murals, and gold-etched floral elements come together to create a striking visual narrative.

The patterned inlay flooring further enhances the rich material palette, adding depth and character to the courtyard. Bathed in natural light, this space creates a dynamic interplay between light, texture, and material, transforming throughout the day. The courtyard not only serves as a serene gathering point but also reflects the essence of the home’s design philosophy, where tradition meets contemporary elegance.

The expansive living area impresses with its luxurious design and vibrant colour scheme. A royal blue sofa and a green modern couch create a striking contrast, while a geometric-patterned coffee table anchors the space with its contemporary flair. The walls are adorned with an array of ornate motif decor, incorporating mirrors to enhance the room’s sense of depth and light. A fantastic lighting fixture complements the modern ceiling decor, adding a sophisticated touch to the room. This thoughtfully designed living area seamlessly combines bold colours, elegant patterns, and innovative lighting to create a dynamic and inviting atmosphere.

As you move towards the mandir area, the passage walls are adorned with creatively selected pictures by the designers, enhancing the space with artistic flair. The area features a grand chandelier that adds a touch of opulence with pleasing ceiling decor. The pooja room itself is designed with elegance and a spiritual theme, highlighted by a main wall showcasing a striking lotus mosaic. This thoughtful integration of art and spirituality creates a serene and visually captivating environment.

This dining area features a soft palette enhanced by light-coloured curtains with delicate botanical patterns, adding an airy elegance to the space. The wooden ceiling and fan complement the natural warmth of the room, while the unique chandelier creates a focal point with its contemporary form. Dining chairs with a subtle leafy motif provide comfort while complementing the natural theme of the space. In the background, a golden partition with intricate detailing adds an opulent touch, balancing the understated tones of the room with refined sophistication.

The kitchen boasts a modern and sleek design with a focus on functionality and aesthetics. The white cabinets, accented with wood grain accents, provide ample storage space and a clean look. The white countertops complement the dark-coloured floor, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The island features a built-in cooktop and a platform for additional seating, making it a versatile focal point of the space. The open shelves and glass-panelled cabinets add a touch of visual interest, while the modern wooden ceiling design adds charm to the décor.

This sitting space exemplifies contrasts, where bold colour choices and varied textures coexist harmoniously. Plush leather sofas and armchairs offer comfort and elegance, while the marble floor with geometric patterns and dramatic curtains add a sense of stylishness. An eye-catching coffee table and geometric wall patterns create visual interest, complemented by a sleek modern green TV console unit that integrates and blends seamlessly with the décor. A modern crystal lighting fixture enhances the room’s sophistication, making it a perfect setting for both relaxing and entertaining.

The gym area features antique ceramic tiles that add a touch of classic elegance to the space. A modern, sleek partition with golden framing and sliding doors ensures privacy, separating the gym from the surrounding areas while maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic. This thoughtful design balances functionality with style, creating a comfortable and private space that enhances both the experience and ambience of the gym environment.

The space is further enhanced with artistic touches and modern creative elements, blending elegance and contemporary style to make a striking impression.

The staircase leads to a sitting area characterized by an eclectic mix of sofa styles, each adding charm and comfort to the space. The modern leafy theme wooden ceiling design complements the varied sofa styles, creating a cohesive and stylish environment. This transition area seamlessly blends contemporary elements with a relaxed atmosphere, making it an inviting space for both casual gatherings and more formal occasions. The thoughtful design enhances the overall flow and aesthetic of the home.

The Blue Room features a harmonious palette of warm wooden tones and deep blues, creating a cosy yet sophisticated atmosphere. A modern sofa complements the artistic wall and wooden panelling, while the continuous wooden flooring enhances the room’s elegance. The TV unit, paired with a sleek modern showcase, adds a contemporary touch. A transparent partition and door leading to the balcony, which is adorned with wooden flooring and walls decorated with wave patterns, enriching the space with texture and visual interest.

The outdoor patio seating, overlooking the garden, is designed with a warm palette. It features elegant onyx marble, while the opposite wall is adorned with a textured pebbled mural. This blend of materials adds a touch of sophistication, creating a cosy and inviting space for relaxation amidst the garden views. At night, custom backlit lighting enhances the beauty of these elements, transforming the home’s exterior into a luminous, enchanting space. This careful attention to detail reflects the studio’s dedication to marrying art, nature, and architecture seamlessly.

In the outdoor areas of the Yarn House, designers experimented with a variety of design elements to create a cohesive yet unique narrative. Custom metal panels and intriguing murals were thoughtfully incorporated to add character and tie the overall aesthetic together. Each space within the property tells its own story, with every design detail playing a role in guiding movement, framing views, and setting the feel for both function and atmosphere.

The outdoor courtyard is a prime example, where the arch frames the view and serves as a natural pathway, inviting exploration. This careful integration of art and architecture ensures that each area within the property not only serves its purpose but also enriches the overall experience for those who inhabit or visit the space.
