House 405 | The Design Chapel | Mumbai
In the heart of Mumbai, The Design Chapel has designed this house as a refreshing testament to the power of understated elegance. An effort was made to make sure that every design element in this home speaks of quiet confidence. A thoughtful interplay of textures, tones, and tactile comfort defines the space, blending modern design elements with a soothing, lived-in warmth.
Living and Dining
At the core of the living area is a pastel green sofa, inviting in both color and comfort. The muted mint tone adds a gentle pop against the backdrop of ivory and beige paneled walls, offering just enough contrast to feel fresh without overwhelming the senses. The tailored upholstery is complemented by a soft, boucle throw and subtly striped cushions, adding a sense of cozy refinement.
The cabinetry and wall detailing carry forward the theme of minimal sophistication. Clean vertical grooves and linear black accents on a creamy base add architectural depth to the room without any visual noise. It’s a modern nod to Art Deco geometry, restrained yet striking. Natural materials ground the aesthetic—seen in the solid wood coffee table and the sculptural side table, each with warm undertones and raw edges that soften the structured surroundings.
A hint of drama arrives in the form of deep green niches flanking the TV unit. These cubbies, styled with modern ceramics and figurines, provide both storage and personality, while the sage-toned drawers below echo the hues of the sofa and unify the palette.
Floor-to-ceiling curtains in oatmeal beige filter the abundant natural light from the large window, casting a golden glow across the space. The addition of a tall indoor plant infuses vitality and completes the palette with a natural flourish.
We designed the dining nook which is a part of the living area with an intention to prove that even compact corners can feel expansive and luxurious. While we designed the space to maximize functionality, care was taken that the curated furniture provided warmth and visual continuity.
A custom-built wooden dining table anchors the corner layout and the fluted fabric backrest and soft upholstery on the dining chairs in neutral tones create a cozy ambiance—ideal for everything from leisurely weekend brunches to intimate family dinners.
Overhead, a cluster of handcrafted cane pendant lights brings a subtle artisanal charm. Their soft glow and organic textures cast layered shadows that enhance the space’s tactile quality. These suspended forms become sculptural statements, anchoring the dining area and providing vertical interest.
A striking feature wall clad with black-framed mirror panels not only expands the visual volume of the space but also reflects natural light, adding depth and dimension. On one side, a tall glass-fronted crockery cabinet integrates a mandir unit on the side opening with a jail door towards the passage.
In a city where space often comes at a premium, this dining nook exemplifies how thoughtful detailing and spatial intelligence can elevate everyday functional living into design.
Kitchen
Set within a compact footprint, this contemporary kitchen embodies the perfect blend of aesthetic clarity and everyday utility. It’s a space designed not just for cooking, but for calm.
The palette is a refreshing departure from traditional kitchen tones. A muted sage green adorns the base cabinets, lending a sense of grounded freshness. These are paired with high-gloss upper cabinets in a soft taupe, reflecting natural light and giving the illusion of height. The result is a two-tone harmony that feels modern, clean, and quietly confident. The continuous grey stone surface along the walls and counter avoids visual clutter, making the space feel unified and expansive. It’s a tactile and tonal choice that not only elevates the visual language but is also easy to maintain.
Practicality is embedded throughout—there’s even a neatly tucked-in washing machine, framed smartly to feel like a part of the design. This kitchen is not loud, but it leaves a lasting impression. It proves that urban homes don’t need to compromise on elegance for efficiency.
Master Bedroom
This master bedroom is a quiet celebration of craft, calm, and character. Bathed in the soft glow of natural light and layered in tactile warmth, the space feels as emotionally comforting as it is visually composed.
The room is anchored by a custom paneled wooden wainscot that wraps the lower perimeter of the space, bringing architectural rhythm and structure. The powder blue upholstered headboard stands out against the warm wood paneling, instantly drawing the eye and grounding the composition making the bed a study in contrast and harmony. Above the bed, three abstract landscape prints—rendered in sun-washed oranges and terracotta—echo the hues of a setting sun.
A slim openable writing desk, paired with a minimalist chair, completes the room’s functionality without interrupting the visual continuity of the grid paneling. The space beyond opens to city views, but inside, the room is a cocoon of calm.
The dressing unit has been designed as a vertical insert into the otherwise horizontal running paneling. With mirror cladded on the sliding door and shelving behind it hides its functionality smartly. The room’s tonal palette leans into warmth with sandy peach walls, woven textures, and creamy cabinetry being tied by the blue bed and side tables.
A space that feels like the golden hour, every hour.
Guest Bedroom
The guest bedroom is designed to integrate both functionality and minimalism with tactile warmth and layered softness. The Sofa cum bed in a sea blue colour occupies a corner inviting both day lounging and overnight stays. Framing the bed are soft beige walls clad in a subtle textured wallpaper that brings warmth and cohesion to the space. Above the headboard, two botanical illustrations in muted tones add an organic, almost vintage touch, while the asymmetric black-rimmed mirror introduces a note of modern edge.
Storage is smartly integrated through sleek, full-height wardrobes in a soft matte finish with dark inlay trims, echoing the mirror frame and lending structure to the room. Open shelving with ceramic vases and playful planters provide just the right dose of personality and greenery.
Natural light floods the space thanks to full-length sliding windows dressed in fluid drapes, creating a gentle interplay of light and shadow throughout the day.
