Rattan Rhapsody | 3 minds perspective | Goa
In the heart of Goa , lush palm trees sway gently in the breeze, their fronds framing a breathtaking vista. Here, nestled amidst this serene landscape, lies a home designed for peace and rejuvenation.
Our clients, a family relocating from Kuwait to Goa, approached us with a unique vision for their permanent home. They desired a space that captured the essence of Goa’s laid-back, relaxed vibe, yet with a modern twist. Their teenagers craved a departure from the typical Goan design, while the parents yearned for a quirky and personalized sanctuary – a welcoming home they could return to for peace and rejuvenation, even after temporary absences in Kuwait.
This house embodies a captivating fusion of modern and traditional Goan aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from Goa’s classic architecture, the design features open spaces with exposed beams, eliminating the need for false ceilings. This creates a sense of openness and serenity, further enhanced by the use of soft, natural lighting. However, the space isn’t simply a homage to the past.
Modern materials like textured laminates, eye-catching custom printed wallpapers, and exposed brick wall claddings bring a contemporary edge. The extensive use of rattan throughout the space adds a touch of warmth and texture, seamlessly integrating Goan heritage with a modern twist. In essence, this design style is Quirky Colonial Revival.
Our design for this house draws inspiration from a captivating interplay of past and present. The graceful arches, a hallmark of Portuguese architecture, are not merely replicated but reimagined. They flow seamlessly throughout the space, becoming a unifying element that connects the modern and traditional aspects of the design. Beyond architectural heritage, Goa’s vibrant natural beauty played a significant role in shaping this haven.
We sought to evoke a sense of freedom and exhilaration, mirroring the spirit of this coastal paradise. The master bedroom and living room become sanctuaries of tranquility, infused with the essence of Goa’s carefree nature. Floral prints and bird motifs dance across the walls, adding a touch of chic whimsy. These elements are not merely decorative; they are an invitation to unwind and embrace the relaxed spirit of Goa.
The color palette for this house is a captivating study in contrasts. The foundation lies in a muted, pastel canvas – a soothing symphony of neutrals that promotes relaxation and peace. Think sage green in the living room, echoing the calming hues of nature that surround the property. This serene base becomes the perfect canvas for a vibrant explosion of personality. Pops of color are strategically introduced through décor, fabric prints, and upholstery. Quirky patterns adorn the loose furniture, adding a playful touch and infusing the space with joy. Despite the use of distinct color palettes in each room, a sense of harmony prevails.
Just as nature itself seamlessly blends diverse elements, so too do the colors in this house create a unified and uplifting atmosphere. Whimsical wonder takes center stage in the master bedroom and living room, adorned with custom-designed wallpapers. These playful creations seamlessly tie the spaces together, solidifying the house’s modern chic vibe with a touch of quirky charm.
The use of the material “Rattan” takes center stage in this captivating design, weaving a harmonious melody throughout the various spaces. More than just a material, it becomes a testament to the enduring beauty and versatility of this timeless element. From the grand statement of the master bedroom’s headboard to the thoughtfully chosen furniture pieces in the living room and even the charming study chair in the children’s room, rattan plays a captivating role. This deliberate choice isn’t merely aesthetic; it’s a celebration of Goa’s heritage.
Rattan’s history in Portuguese architecture and its longstanding use in Goan furniture finds a modern expression in this design. It’s a subtle nod to the past, woven seamlessly into the contemporary fabric of the house. The result is a “Rattan Rhapsody” – a symphony of textures and forms that sings the praises of this remarkable material.
