Flourishing through Creativity – House No. 12 | Quirk Studio | Mumbai
Quirk Studio, by the dynamic duo Disha Bhavsar and Shivani Ajmera is an epitome of bringing zen to your lifestyle through Architecture. This upcoming studio in Mumbai is notorious for pushing the boundaries of creativity and imagination. “The start of the Quirk Studio is a fascinating story that reaches us today, accompanied by an awe-inspiring list of projects manifested by the practice.” – Royale Impex
Disha remembers “While working together at the publication, both of us happened to collaborate on several events. On one such busy day in Delhi, we were sitting across from each other, and we happened to have an ambitious conversation about starting something together. It was quite an instinctive, in-the-moment discussion where we discussed our goals, ambition and the likes. In hindsight, both of us are interior designers looking to explore different things. We agreed that there was a lot of untapped potential we could explore and got on board.” while talking to Royale Impex
In 2019, this duo finished a beautiful home which is now called the House No. 12 in Mumbai. This home looking over the Mumbai skyline is the center of peace and serenity for its owners and Disha & Shivani spared no expense of their hard work and imagination while working on this Project. House No. 12 is a combination of walls that speak a thousand words and space that demands silence. A mixture of modern loft and contemporary furniture brings a new life to the space.
The entire house, from the living area to the bedrooms, has been curated carefully to match the aura of the individual space. As you start with the living area with a beautiful view, you see calmer walls with sleek blue lounger and an ivory L-section couch. To bring it all together, they have used an ivory rug and a round exclusive table. The entire space comes well together throughout to provide great views outside, and a calmer atmosphere inside.
Quirk Studio’s design strategy has always been, as Disha discussed, “We believe in designing spaces that are a true reflection of the inhabitants, whether a young couple or an older person, we believe in striking the right balance with our designs,”
Moving to the lounge area, you see a sudden shift in aesthetics. While the living area was sleek, modern, and calmer, the lounge area feels more heavy and personal. A loft design with leather couch and a pirate’s chest center table, dual-tone rug, and a splash of greenery brings the personal touch of its inhabitants. This space is meant for “the alone time” and comfort of space is the key.
The biggest challenge that an Architect faces is when they are expected to replicate, Shivani says, “Oh yes, the entire concept of replicating the trends and what is in vogue, or copying what others have is dated. Individuality is finally in the spotlight. Also, in Mumbai where spaces are compact, people have learnt to optimise spaces on their balconies instead of closing them and extending their bedrooms. The whole transition of outdoors coming indoors is happening, which is great,” which is quite evident in House No. 12.
Coming to the bedrooms, we see similarities between the lounge, in terms of the personal feel, but there is an addition of elegance and luxury to the mix. We see pastel colors throughout the master bedroom, clean walls, and minimalistic look. A classic contemporary example per say. The room has been cleared out of all the clutter for a single task, and that is, a serene sleep. Along with the master bedroom, you see the master closet as well as the master bathroom, where all the action is. We see printed walls, sleek cutouts, and wooden-look flooring. It continues the contemporary theme but is louder and colorful.
Disha explains, “Both Shivani and I believe in mellow and zen spaces. When one experiences a space designed by us, there is an evident feeling of calmness. We believe in very clutter-free spaces.” which is definitely the case when we talk about House No. 12. The different sections of the house work well together and cater to the individualistic needs and choices. There is the noise of emotions that every section represents but the space itself is clutter-free and calming.
