Menath Residence | Studio Homzstead | Goregaon
This 780-square-foot home in Mumbai harmonizes curvilinear grace with reflective modernity.
Through a seamless fusion of sinuous forms, reflective mirrors, and striking vertical lines, Studio Homzstead employs dusky orange accents to create a serene ambiance, evoking a tranquil state.
The client, Ms. Menath approached Hormuzd Katrak, principal Architect of Studio Homzstead with a simple brief; “Breathe new life into my childhood home.” This wasn’t just any home; it was a haven where memories lingered.
Since this space wasn’t large, Hormuzd started off by knocking down most of the existing partition walls to enhance the sense of openness by bringing in more air and natural light, along with facilitating unhindered human circulation. However, the original builder grade flooring was maintained. The result is an uncluttered and inviting home that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding environment.
The Main door is a beautiful fluted Oakwood door with a circular convex handle, adding to the predominant curves you see around the room. The walls of the apartment are modernized by using ‘Dune Halo’ a velvet like textured paint with chromatic finishing. The first thing you see as you enter this home is a Plumeria plant, that symbolizes renewal.
The highlight of the living room is a coffee table, designed by Hormuzd. “This piece was designed keeping in mind that we didn’t have a lot of space to play with, but we still wanted an element of fun in the room.” A brushed gold and translucent rock veneer table, illuminated from within, changes the atmosphere of the house after dark. Lighting up the table ensures that the apartment unveils its different personalities as the day transitions into night.
The point of convergence is the innovative use of curvilinear design elements, as seen in the false ceilings, doorways, the living room seating area and the dining bench. “We extended the kitchen counter into the dining area via a curved wall-mounted bench, creating a functional and visually striking connection between the two spaces,” states Hormuzd.
One of the standout features is the prudent placement of mirrors throughout the residence. These mirrored walls, not only serve a practical purpose by visually expanding this space, but they also play a pivotal role in reflecting the breathtaking scenic sunset view. The play of light against the mirrors creates a dynamic interplay of shadows and reflections, transforming the living space into a canvas of ever-changing art. “We crafted a brilliant idea by incorporating floor-to-ceiling sliding wardrobe shutters, cleverly designed as full-length mirrors.” This addition not only created depth but also magically expanded the room, making it seem far more spacious than its actual size.
The powder bathroom showcases a combination of colours, patterns, fixtures and lights, creating an opulent atmosphere. With mother of pearl tiles, a bold black accent wall and Kota flooring, this bathroom is an ode to the eccentric yet refined tastes of the contrasting colours. The use of quirky, holographic-filmed hanging bulbs, add a splash of colour to a monochromatic bathroom.
A fixed-ended structural steel beam clad with teak wood, serves as a floating bench in the master bedroom. The focal point of this room, is the saffron accent wall which bathes the room in hues of the setting sun. Sleek, vertical flutes discreetly veil the master bathroom door, crafting an illusion of seamless lines. What used to be a third bedroom, is now a walk-in wardrobe partitioned with a bifold door. This “walk-in wardrobe” can also act as a guest bedroom by unfolding the single seater sofa into a bed.
“I own as many shoes as I do books,” said the client when giving the brief for the study/guest room. To house all of these books, Hormuzd created a wall mounted, curved bookshelf and to make space for her beloved shoes, the team took down a partition wall and created an inbuilt wooden louvered cupboard. This room is as aesthetic as it is functional, accented with a 3D wallpaper and adorned with a modern arched Mandir. “Since the client works from home, we gave her a floating work table overlooking the exquisite view.”
A true testament to the fusion of form and function is the thoughtfully constructed balcony deck. This outdoor sanctuary provides a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor living, offering the perfect spot to unwind and savour the beauty of the surrounding mangroves. The deck; embellished by a vertical garden and a Buddha water fountain, becomes a private oasis to enjoy the mesmerizing sunset views that paint the sky in hues of orange and pink.
Every piece of furniture and curio seems purposefully positioned, ensuring that natural light dances upon them, creating an ever-evolving interplay between space and illumination. “Every risk we took played out in our favour and transformed into Ms. Menath’s dream home.”
Interior Lover Team’s view on the Project
Studio Homzstead, Founder and Principal Designer Architect Hormuzd Katrak, artistically shaped this Menath Residence minimal yet luxurious residence inspired by natural elements and shapes. This home is a flawless balance of simplicity and indulgence in an 800 sq. ft., area in Bangur Nagar, Goregaon West, Mumbai. The design features curves, lines, uncluttered surfaces, and a neutral colour palette, creating a sense of calm and serenity. But despite the simplicity, the interiors are sparse, it features high-quality materials creating a sense of sophistication and refinement. A statement piece of furniture elevates the space and adds a touch of highlight shade. The interiors create a peaceful, sophisticated environment that is both beautiful and functional. The design inspired by nature has been beautifully implemented in the ceiling and selected wall arts which symbolize peace. Lighting fixtures play a key role in enhancing the design, creating a bright and airy ambience that is conducive to rest and rejuvenation.
