House of तोषण | Studio Nitya | Pune
The project is a thoughtfully designed 1870 sq. ft. carpet-area duplex penthouse located in Kharadi, Pune, a fast-developing IT hub shaping the city’s modern skyline. Client vision was to create a calm, peaceful environment where they could unwind after work and eventually spend their retirement years in comfort and ease. This home, named House of तोषण (Toshan) — meaning nourishment, care, and fulfilment — was designed for a family of three, the home reflects a design philosophy rooted in balance, warmth, sustainability, and timeless elegance.
Entrance
The entrance is designed as a quiet statement of elegance, balance, and thoughtful detailing – setting the tone for the home from the very first step. The design explores a refined positive–negative concept in doors. The safety door jali, crafted through waste wood cuttings, becomes the positive element – a textured, sustainable design expression that adds rhythm and depth. In contrast, the main door precisely aligned cut-outs backed with dark brown painted glass, creating a layered negative that introduces visual depth and subtle drama. This alignment establishes a strong design dialogue between the two doors while maintaining visual continuity.
A cleverly designed nameplate niche with minimal lettering forms a seamless wall paneling when the safety door is fully opened, the niche visually merges into the surface, creating the illusion of a single continuous panel, reflecting refined design intelligence and detailing precision.
Entrance Lobby
The entrance lobby functions as both an accent zone and a user-centric transition space. A sculptural marble-finish console with hidden drawers discreetly accommodates daily essentials such as keys and utilities, keeping the space visually clean while enhancing everyday functionality. A soft-toned nature-inspired wallpaper panel, depicting birds and delicate branches, introduces calmness, simplicity, and a subtle reflection of the client’s love for minimalism and nature. Together, the entrance and lobby become more than a threshold.
Living Room
The living room is a warm and emotionally grounding space where modern elegance meets everyday comfort. The design is defined by a material contrast between marble-finish wall tiles and grey fluted panels, creating a sophisticated yet subtle visual composition. A brushed gold niche framing the TV unit adds a gentle luxury accent, giving the focal wall a distinctive identity.
The monochrome furniture palette flows seamlessly with the surrounding curtain fabrics, beige upholstery, wall tones, and warm wooden finishes, creating a harmonious and visually balanced environment. A key architectural challenge of the exposed RCC staircase beam has been smartly transformed into a design feature by mirroring it with a dummy beam and introducing a curved shallow wooden ceiling with fluted detailing. This design move not only creates visual symmetry but also adds rhythm, depth, and architectural character to the space.
Natural light filtered through sheer curtains fills the living area, enhancing openness, while layered lighting ensures a soft, inviting ambience throughout the day and evening. The opened-up planning allows the living and dining areas to flow into each other, creating a connected social space ideal for family gatherings.
Staircase
The staircase in the apartment has a long story even prior to the slab casting of the 18th floor. The client had a simple briefing that even the elderly members of the family should climb it easily. Analysing the staircase designed by the builder did not fit into the standards. Hence, we completely redesigned it, for which customization was done into the cutout proposed by the builder before casting the RCC slab. The staircase is curated with simple ms structure work in ms plates and then neatly finished in slim planks of walnut wood with interesting nosing details. The railing was an important design call where perfect thickness of wooden handrail made it look minimal and modern than turning complete traditional style.
Kitchen
The kitchen is a minimal, modern modular space where refined aesthetics meet high-performance functionality. Designed with a clean visual language, the kitchen features ivory glossy shutters paired with matte rose-gold concealed handles, creating a soft yet luxurious contrast that feels contemporary. The black Indian granite countertop anchors the space with durability and elegance, offering a surface that is both highly functional for everyday Indian cooking and visually sophisticated. A sleek, in-ceiling modern chimney maintains a clean ceiling line, allowing the kitchen to appear uncluttered. The backsplash wall is clad in full height marble tiles, a design decision that enhances reflectivity, amplifies natural light, and visually expands the space than its actual footprint.
All storage units and tall units are aligned along a single wall, ensuring visual discipline and functional efficiency. Within this composition, a semi-closed Devghar is integrated using fluted glass shutters, detailed with traditional decorative bells, creating a beautiful balance between modern minimalism and cultural warmth.
Dining area
The dining area flows effortlessly between the living room and the kitchen, making it a highly user-centric and spatially open zone. This open planning enhances movement, interaction, and visual connectivity, creating a naturally spacious environment. The dining backdrop is defined by a fluted wood paneling combined with mirrors, adding depth, proportion, and refined detailing without visual heaviness. The crockery unit is subtly concealed within this composition — its fluted glass and linear detailing seamlessly blending into the wall panel, making it feel integrated rather than imposed. Completing the space is artistic elongated fiber hanging light, which acts as a sculptural element while softly illuminating the dining zone.
Guest Bedroom
The guest bedroom is designed as a space of simplicity, warmth, and emotional continuity, where minimal design is enriched by personal meaning. At the heart of the room are the two original wooden beds, preserved from the client’s first-ever furniture purchases. Rather than replacing them, the design celebrates them by integrating them seamlessly into a modern setting.
The colour theme and curated artwork work in harmony, creating a balanced visual rhythm. The headboard composition is designed with subtle curves and upholstered accent cushion, adding softness and visual comfort. A minimal wardrobe design featuring linear grooves and concealed teak-wood handle detailing.
Son’s Bedroom
The son’s bedroom is envisioned as the most expressive and defining space of the home — a perfect balance between personality-driven design, thoughtful planning, and refined modern aesthetics.
This fluted language continues into the bedroom design through the blue fluted wall panels, establishing a rhythmic backdrop that defines the identity of the room and structured visual cadence. The room’s most striking narrative element is the bespoke cricket-inspired mural installation. Instead of conventional player wallpapers or graphics, the design introduces a 5.5-foot long custom teakwood cricket bat, paired with a textured cricket ball and sleek minimalist stumps, transforming the wall into a sculptural, artistic tribute to the son’s love for cricket. This installation also serves as a display shelf for trophies and achievements.
The accent orange leather upholstered bed becomes a focal point, creating a contrast against the soft blue fluted backdrop, adding energy and youthful vibrance to the space.
The study zone reflects playful personalization — the custom table leg detail subtly references a cricket bat form, while the open floating shelves are to showcase the son’s car collection, books, and personal objects, blending function with identity. Opposite the bed, a minimal wooden ledge is designed as an informal seating and gathering space for friends, encouraging interaction and relaxed social moments.
A complete layout revision allowed the space to be reimagined with a strong functional core, introducing a walk-in wardrobe and a generously planned dressing area that responds to contemporary living patterns. The wardrobe planning integrates airy storage zones specifically for frequently used sportswear, ensuring ventilation for everyday usability. Walk-in wardrobe privacy is handled with subtle elegance through a fluted shutter system, creating a visual screen that filters views.
Master Bedroom
The master bedroom located on the top most level of the duplex penthouse, is conceived as a quiet retreat of warmth, simplicity, and mindful living. Designed to reflect the client’s preference for minimalism, the space embraces calm aesthetics and uncluttered planning creating a room that feels grounded, serene, and emotionally comforting.
The design language is intentionally restrained, allowing material quality and proportions to define the space rather than decorative excess. A strong sense of warmth is achieved through the use of teak wood furniture, perfectly matched with the wooden flooring. This natural palette envelops the space in a soft, earthy warmth, enhancing the sense of comfort and calm. The room layout is smartly planned, ensuring that circulation remains uninterrupted even with the bed positioned at the center of the space. The bed is supported by a functional console backing, discreetly designed to store surplus everyday essentials, making storage invisible yet accessible.
The absence of side tables becomes a design opportunity rather than a limitation. The bed headboard integrates a sleek slit-detail console system, allowing residents to slide in a mobile phone or book directly from the bed, creating a seamless, clutter-free sleeping experience that blends design with everyday comfort.
The wardrobe spans along a 15-foot wall, yet never overwhelms the space due to its minimal modern ivory jute-fabric and wooden finish, which softens its visual mass. To balance the simplicity of the shutters, antique accent handles are introduced. Within this wardrobe composition lies a concealed door to the master toilet, integrated so seamlessly that it reads as part of the wardrobe wall. At the foot of the bed, a soft ottoman seating creates a casual interaction zone — a space for quiet conversations and relaxed family moments.
Master Bathroom
This master bathroom was created by extending into an unused terrace area, transforming it into a naturally lit, serene wellness zone. The extension is covered with MS roofing, with a strategically designed skylight cut-out that allows soft, indirect natural light to filter into the space. The palette is kept simple, with grey matt floor and white satvario tiles on the wall. A slick geometric inlay pattern is introduced to break the monotony of white. The bathtub zone is designed as a calm focal point, framed with indoor plant greenery and natural light, creating a spa-like ambiance. To contrast the light surfaces, all-black fittings and glass partitions are used, giving the space a contemporary identity.
Terrace
The terrace is designed as a multifunctional outdoor living space that balances comfort, sustainability, and aesthetics. A raised wooden tiled deck defines the seating zone, with a semi-covered pergola structure providing essential shade. The pergola also serves a dual purpose by supporting solar panels. We integrated a sustainable energy solution into the design and introduced long-term environmental value for the client. A compact pantry counter is added for frequent family gatherings and casual hosting, making the terrace highly functional for social use. Lush natural planters soften the hard surfaces and bring life to the space especially significant at the 18th-floor.

House of तोषण emerges as a nuanced study in balance, warmth, and enduring refinement. Crafted by Studio Nitya, this 1,870 sq. ft. Pune residence is guided by a design philosophy that privileges restraint over excess and material integrity over ornamentation. The interiors articulate a quiet interplay of positive and negative forms, fluted detailing, and layered surfaces that lend dimension while preserving visual calm. A composed palette of ivories, muted greys, teak, and walnut is elevated with brushed metallic accents, creating an atmosphere of understated sophistication. Marble expanses and woven, jute-like textures introduce tactile contrast, enriching the sensory experience without disrupting harmony.
Every surface is resolved with precision, allowing craftsmanship to become the central narrative. Sustainability is embedded seamlessly within the aesthetic framework through thoughtfully repurposed materials and energy-conscious integrations. Bespoke elements transform functional necessities into sculptural features, reinforcing a cohesive and intelligent design language. Filtered daylight and carefully orchestrated ambient lighting further enhance the home’s serene temperament. True to its name, House of तोषण embodies nourishment and fulfilment—an interior landscape that feels composed, timeless, and quietly luxurious.
