Matru Shakti – A Soulful Dwelling On A Compact Urban Plot | MJB Architects | Rajkot

MJB Architects is a Rajkot-based design firm established in 2018 by Ar. Jash Bhalodia and Ar. Anjali Hadvani. It has flourished and has served a wide range of architectural, interior, and landscape designing projects for not only Rajkot but other cities as well.

The project “Matru Shakti” is a residential project which stands tall in the urban context of Rajkot. Both the architecture and interior design of this establishment had a task to deal with its plot proportions. It is a three-storey above ground on a narrow compact plot with 22’ width and 61’ depth; it is confined by three abutting plots keeping the north open.

At the architectural level, an effort was made to well connect the spatial organization within itself as well as bring in sufficient natural light and wind. Because the plot proportions were rigid enough to deliberately satisfy the natural light and wind requirements of this hot semi-arid region, a triple height shaft was designed so that an ample amount of light could flush from the skylight at the top level and simultaneously hot air could escape from above.

At interior design level, the idea was to create a modern space that is also functionally optimal with the right aesthetics. Entering the house, the vestibule contains beautiful glass paneling along with a metal jail which gives an indirect visual connection to internal spaces. The Ganesha statue gives a welcoming vibe. Overall, each space, along with the decor, artwork, and the green elements, looks bright and cozy.

The living room is the space where the family wants to spend time together to unwind. The spacious living room was designed to host multiple activities at any given point in time. Designers used grey velvet upholstered sofa with a white center table complimenting the wooden base TV unit with the touch of white. While traditional swing and recliner chair with leg rest in beige palate adds charm to the living area.

The design idea of dining wall arts here relies on an Indian modern outlook, a fine balance between ethnic motifs and contemporary style. Black top of dining table and wooden base with cream upholstered dining chair compliments the wall arts which was décor on triple- heighted wall.

In this project, the aim was to create a suitable balance of Indian traditional values with contemporary comforts. The triple-height dining area becomes the soul of the house. Because of the slab cut out, the house becomes spacious and bathed in natural light all through the day. Hence, our conscious effort was to keep the design alive and fresh, with an inherent lightness.

The temple, being the sustainability of any culture, was given its special position at the heart of the house, both in length and width wise, so that it can be seen from all floors. Also incorporating the age-old Vastushastra for the placement of this holy space, no other space is designed above it and is thus kept inaccessible on its top.

All the bedrooms are designed with different materials and colors to give them luxury comfort, and a trendy look. In Master bed, the use of lacquer paint and back painted glass on the wardrobe creates a great color combination. Other bedrooms are a seamless blend of different color combinations, material explorations, furniture pieces, and decor.

In the master bedroom bed back wall ornamented with the use of lacquer sky blue paint while pastel shades of back painted glass on the wardrobe creates a stunning decor. Gold pendent lamps accentuates the vertical décor on the wall of bed. An elegant ceiling design and full length grey curtain adds charm to the bedroom décor.

In the second bedroom designers used a classic brown leatherette headboard of the bed while bed back wall décor with stone work which is the focal point of the room. The Stone wall looks classier with wooden paneling with vertical groves in it. The combination of furniture and different color palate compliments the interior space of the bedroom.

The third bedroom is the most simple and minimalistic room where designers used dark tone along with white palate. The simple room has a strong design element in its headboard which is in white leatherette and grey side table with wooden touch. All the elements in the bedroom are a seamless blend with each other.
