The Boho Nest :A Cozy Haven in Kotturpuram, Chennai Designed by Serenity By Sadhana
Nestled in Kotturpuram, Chennai, this 1600 sq ft home was designed for a family of three: Dr. Vignesh, Dr. Runitha, and their 8-year-old daughter, Sushmita. Amid their fast-paced lives, the priority was to create a home that seamlessly blends their demanding schedules with family needs.
The designers aimed to evoke a sense of “hygge,” the Danish concept of extreme coziness. This modern minimalist space, infused with Scandinavian touches, was crafted to provide comfort, functionality, and serenity, perfectly accommodating the lifestyle of two busy professionals.
A Serene, Sunlit Sanctuary
The client’s requirement was uncluttered spaces and abundant natural light. This vision was brought to life with a neutral palette and linen curtains covering large fenestrations. Soft, beige curtains allow natural light to flood the rooms while maintaining privacy and showcasing the beauty of nature through expansive windows.
The home’s understated elegance is highlighted by the use of natural materials, particularly light oak wood tones, creating a light and airy atmosphere. Darker colors are introduced selectively through curated furniture, boosting the contemporary and cozy visual appeal.
Focusing on simplicity, functionality, and comfort, the interior design exudes a harmonious blend of neutral tones and natural materials, resulting in a practical yet visually pleasing space with a neat, uncluttered look.
The Living Room
Minimalist, earthy, and organic, the living room exudes a peaceful and inviting atmosphere, ideal for relaxation and socializing. Designed as a warm and comfortable space for the family to gather daily, it combines functionality with style. Soft textiles, neutral colors, and natural materials create a beautiful and restful environment.
In the cozy living room, a dark gray tufted sofa and two matching armchairs form a perfectly balanced arrangement. Their bold color contrasts with the light walls and curtains, making the space feel open and airy.
A light wood coffee table sits at the center, its natural texture harmonizing with the wooden floors and the sofa’s legs. A large, soft rug ties the furniture together, while throw rugs and cushions add comfort and color against the dark gray.
In one corner, a large potted fiddle leaf fig injects a vibrant touch of greenery. The walls are adorned with three framed botanical prints, offering subtle pops of color and a hint of nature.
The Mural Wall
A striking feature of the living room is the expansive mural wall, featuring a composition of lotuses in a white plaster finish. This backlit, lotus-themed mural emits a radiant glow, casting a tranquil and calming ambiance throughout the space. The white plaster finish adds a sense of purity and sophistication, making the mural wall a perfect blend of modern elegance and timeless tranquility. It serves as both a focal point and a soothing backdrop, enhancing the overall aesthetic and atmosphere of the room.
The Dining, Puja, and Kitchen
Separating the living and dining areas is a grid sliding door with fluted glass, adding privacy to the dining, kitchen, and media room from the formal family room. On the other side of this partition, the dining area features an expandable circular table with four chairs, complemented by a crockery unit and a puja room. The crockery unit and puja entrance was designed as a cohesive built-in unit, with rattan laminate highlighting the puja entrance.
The glass-fronted display cabinets offer balanced symmetry, providing ample space for decorative items and collectibles. In the kitchen, the wall was removed to create a breakfast counter with two high chairs, ensuring an open and connected space. Finished with grey laminate, jet black granite counters, and black profile handles, the kitchen is minimal, efficient and functional.
Foyer
The foyer, the first sight upon entering, features a reposeful Buddha statue nestled between the two bedroom doors, creating a Zen aesthetic. Paired with a large circular mirror above a sleek oak console table, the space feels expansive and light-filled. A woven pendant light adds texture and a warm, ambient glow, augmenting the welcoming atmosphere.
Master Bedroom Retreat
The master bedroom showcases understated glamour with grounding natural elements. A grey upholstered bed is paired with a dresser and an additional storage unit, while an open bookshelf doubles as bedside storage. Sleek built-in wardrobes blend seamlessly with the room’s design, enhanced by unique round wooden handles and reeded details at the base.
Mint green linens provide a refreshing pop of color, breaking monotony and fostering a soothing atmosphere. The large window is framed with beige curtains and a light patterned sheer, allowing natural light to filter through and making the room feel airy and spacious.
An artsy wallpaper behind the bed harmonizes the room’s color palette and design elements, creating a stylish and comfortable retreat from the outside world.
Daughter’s Room
Thoughtfully designed for the couple’s 8-year-old daughter, this bedroom blends functionality, comfort, and whimsy to create a nurturing environment. The goal was to craft a space that supports sleep, study, play, and growth while inspiring creativity.
The room displays a gentle color scheme of blush pink, soft grey, and light wood tones, adding warmth and elevating the atmosphere. A minimalist wooden bed with a low-profile frame is dressed in pastel pink bedding, accented by grey pillows for subtle contrast.
Adjacent to the low profile bed, a sleek white desk with a modern grey mesh chair provides a stylish study area. Above the desk, a white pegboard offers a space for personalization, allowing the child to display photos and mementos that make the room uniquely hers.
The Bay seating area
The bay seating area serves as a cozy reading nook that connects to the outside world. Fitted with a pink seat and floral throw pillows, it’s perfect for reading, daydreaming, or playing with friends while enjoying the natural light. The space continues as a bookshelf and transitions into an effective wardrobe, seamlessly accommodating her belongings.
Clever storage solutions have been integrated throughout, including storage beneath the hydraulic bed and within the L-shaped wardrobe. Built-in drawers in the bed are ideal for toys, books, or clothing, while a tall wardrobe with matching wood tones and blush pink accents provides additional space for clothes and accessories.
The wall behind the bed features a delicate mural of hand-painted cascading leaves in shades of peach and beige. This artistic touch enhances the room’s vertical dimension and complements the bay area seating, creating a harmonious and inviting space.
The Media Room
Designed as a luxurious, versatile space, the media room serves as both a family retreat and an entertaining venue. A plush royal blue leather armchair with a footrest offers supreme comfort for movie watching, complemented by a discreet home bar unit with a mini fridge next to the blue lounge sofa.
A massive 100-inch wall-mounted screen and inbuilt speakers dominate the opposite wall, providing an immersive movie experience. Below the screen, a sleek black entertainment console, featuring ribbed black laminate, houses state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment, including a projector, with both open and closed storage for a clutter-free look.
Dark grey walls, flexible dimmable spotlights, and thick sound-absorbing drapes ensure the room can be made pitch dark, perfect for any time of day.
In summary, this Boho nest is a perfectly cozy space bringing in harmony and peace. It serves as a perfect sanctuary for relaxation, reconnection, and rejuvenation, embodying a tranquil and welcoming atmosphere in every corner.
