“A Symphony of Space: Crafting a Timeless Luxe Haven in New Bombay” | The Design Chapel | Vashi, Navi Mumbai
In the heart of New Bombay, a luxurious residential project stands as an assurance of refined tastes and opulent aspirations. Mumbai’s tropical climate and high population density set the stage for a design philosophy that prioritizes natural light and ventilation. The challenge, however, was to infuse this space with aspirational opulence for sure but with a thematic coherence. Which meant ensuring the final composition wasn’t a mere collection of lavish objects, but a symphony of design elements working in harmony
The Design Chapel, celebrated for its mastery in crafting vibrant, functional spaces, aims to embody thoughtful and impeccably executed designs. Guided by Alain de Botton’s philosophy, they weave spatial narratives that intricately influence daily life, recognizing homes as canvases reflecting individual stories and aspirations.
The challenge at hand was both intriguing and intricate – to guide the homeowners in curating a space that was sophisticated without succumbing to the whims of passing trends and the mere display of taste. As Preshita puts it, “Despite the client’s desire for distinctiveness in each space, our commitment to a unified design language led to a cohesive thread throughout the entire residence.” The essence lay in the ability to control the setting, using layering as a fundamental concept. The concept of layering is a creative approach that involves the strategic integration of diverse elements and textures into the space which contribute to their overall richness, depth and harmony. “Fuelled by a shared passion for colours and patterns, both ours and the client’s, we embarked on a journey to craft layered spaces, creating a symphony of textures and motifs.” says Preshita, the principal designer.
ENTRANCE PASSAGE
In this residence, large windows, skylights, and open spaces seamlessly integrate with the interiors, allowing the vibrant cityscape to breathe life into every room. The thoughtful incorporation of these elements not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also reduces reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning. Undergoing a striking metamorphosis, the residence seamlessly fuses architectural modifications with opulent detailing, reshaping its spatial identity into a realm of refined elegance. Characterized by elongated living and dining spaces, this dwelling welcomes us with an air of sophistication and a commitment to functional design. Civil alterations, a touchstone of this design narrative, have redefined the contours of bedrooms, extended balconies, and other functional spaces.
The entrance of this abode is marked by a bespoke peach pink console, meticulously crafted to set the tone for what lies beyond. Each leg of the console boasts a unique design, providing a distinct touch to this furniture piece. The polyurethane (PU) finish imparts a premium sheen, elevating the console to more than just a functional element but as an artistic introduction to the entire house. Fluted accents on either side of the passage offers a subtle nod to classical design, creating a refined interplay of textures and patterns.
LIVING AREA
The recurring fluted panels introduce a tactile quality to the sofa back wall, orchestrating a harmonious visual rhythm throughout the space. A careful balance is struck between maximal and minimal elements, exemplified by a simple bookshelf that is alongside the marble-clad TV panel. Soft neutrals grace the walls, creating a serene backdrop that harmonizes with the plush sofas and armchairs, adorned in luxurious fabrics. This careful selection of elements creates a refined ambience, where every detail plays a role in the overall symphony of luxury and comfort.
DINNIG AREA
Within the large expanse of the living space is the dining area, a corner with an exquisite table, surrounded by mauve upholstered chairs which forms the focal point due to the contrast it provides with the rest of the space. The stunning chandelier casts its glow over the marble dining table against a mirror integrated panelling strategically placed on the back wall. This not only enhances the sense of space but also reflects the natural light from the windows, imparting an even more expansive feel to the space. This dining area is where the family comes together; it is a space of comfort, and aesthetic finesse. The communal washroom boasts a blend of sage green handmade clay tiles and grey terrazzo, balanced by light grey floor tiles.
KITCHEN
In this kitchen, a culinary haven unfolds with sleek countertops and ample storage. The eye to detail extends to the colour palette, featuring muted blues with dado patterns highlighted yet harmonized by a grey countertop. The subtle blue flooring, complemented by blue storage, creates a balanced scheme, accentuated by black knobs. The continual interplay of colours in this design serves as a constant reminder of the intricate layering, forming connections and ultimately weaving together a narrative that unfolds seamlessly throughout the space.
MASTER BEDROOM
The master bedroom design is immersed in a forest-y palette of blues, pinks and greens. The thoughtful alteration, akin to other rooms, seamlessly incorporates the balcony space, flooding the room with abundant natural light. The vibrant explosion of colours, interwoven with myriad patterns, creates a visual delight without descending into chaos. The layering approach yet again follows through here. Colour, pattern and texture layering is seen here through the floor to the ceiling. Family photos adorn their dedicated memory wall above a blue patterned console. Placed beside a blue dresser on a patterned flooring which is then topped with an abstract designed rug from Asian paints.
The dresser poof and the high back chair are upholstered with the Sabyasachi fabric against floral curtains. The Sabyasachi tropical wallpaper becomes the backdrop for the custom-designed bed head and enhances the festive atmosphere. In this room nothing becomes a focal point but everything stands proud independently and works seamlessly well together. Hints of gold in lighting, accessories, and knick-knacks subtly elevate the aesthetic.
In the bathroom, a delightful blend unfolds with peach-coloured storage and walls, accentuated by the dynamic interplay of black and white patterned tiles. Transparent drop-shaped hanging lights elegantly draw attention to the vibrant colours, enhancing the overall aesthetic with a touch of sophistication.
SON’s ROOM
The son’s love and passion for Lego inspired us to create a Lego-themed room for him. This became the driving force for all the design decisions. Lego is ingeniously incorporated into storage shutters as handles, into shelves and niches. The transformation of a balcony into a functional seating niche showcased the team’s commitment to functional alterations. The checkered curtains harmonized with black-framed glass storage that is accentuated by the muted colours. The layering in this space is artfully done by reinterpreting the colours from the same palette that follows throughout the house.
The bathroom radiates playfulness with blue terrazzo with patterned tiles while a strategically placed mirror enhances space and accommodates more storage. Artistic lighting from White Teak adds a creative flair.
OFFICE SPACE
In the post-COVID era, the demand for home workspaces has become increasingly apparent. The small room became the perfect space to accommodate this function. An entire wall storage was designed to cleverly combine black-framed glass shutters with wooden shutters, serving a dual purpose for a home library and a mandir space, complete with a loft and a soundproof door. A sophisticated colour scheme of mauve, black, and wood, accented with touches of gold, characterizes the interior. This room became the sanctuary for the man of the house.
COMMON GUEST ROOM
In the guest room, a delightful repetition of flutes emerges through a tasteful combination of grey and lime yellow hues. The Sabyasachi wallpaper is used on the sleek wooden tv unit and dresser that harmonizes with the wardrobes. The wallpaper balances the otherwise plain walls of the room making itself the highlight. The mauve upholstered bed back subtly threads through the overall colour scheme of the house. A modern pichwai from Studio Artemist graces the wainscoted back wall, complemented by a hanging corner lamp from White Teak, creating an artful ambiance.
The selection of art, accessories, decorative lights, and rugs was a meticulous curation, each item carefully handpicked. Creating a medley of elements posed a challenge, but the ultimate triumph was achieved by skilfully bringing balance to the composition. The interiors, marked by a bold and ambitious exploration of colours, patterns, and themes, reveal a nuanced and thoughtful approach upon closer inspection. The vibrant explosion of colours and patterns, far from being overwhelming, showcases a measured and intentional approach, resulting in a visually stimulating environment that captivates the senses.
