The Green Emerald | Katalyst Designs | Delhi

The farmhouse is situated in the outskirts of Delhi, designed and curated as a weekend getaway, a gathering place for a family residing in a posh western locality in Delhi. The design brief given by the client spoke of a developed land resonating to a space designed more along the lines of a small resort, their very own paradise! A space to host family and friends, or just be a means to an escape from the hustle-bustle of living in a fast-paced city like Delhi.

Keeping the essential brief in mind, we planned to build the farmhouse at the rear end of the property occupying a total built-up of 2,500 sqft on a land of 4 acres. The house perfectly sits on the expansive land overlooking the spectacular greenery around the massive structure. The structure announces its monumental massing as opposed to the green acting as the perfect balance. The geometrical lines, floor-to-ceiling windows, and lighting are designed to create a powerful emotion. The combination of wood, steel, glass, and cement finish exterior paneling with greens come together in a simple and clean language that resonates with the overall house in a modern-day contemporary – minimalistic expression of a farmhouse, topped up with an amazing panoramic view of the farmlands and green pastures from the machan and the connecting roof.

The not-so-typical long driveway down to the house gives the sense of grandeur, the floating steps making a compelling ascend to the massive off-centered pivot door with the lighting and landscape add to the sense of arrival. The vibrant yet minimal foyer with strip windows further welcomes you with warm diffused light.

To augment the experience of space, entering through the massive doorway that opens into an enclosed foyer holds back the mystery of what lies ahead and with one turn you get to feel the volume of the space grow three folds. Giving into the idea of palatial volume to the living space. The level play here is intended to express the playfulness of the space as well as give a sense of separation without dividing spaces into small enclosures. As you take a seat in the sunken sitting you are in line with the level of the fountain with the foreground of the expansive greenery outside creating a poetic visual bridge between the exterior and interior.

The low height sitting is a modern-day contemporary twist to the old Rajasthanibathak style, with its contrasting color scheme complementing the terrazzo flooring. The false ceiling adds oomph to the space with its greens and drop lights, accentuating the space even further in the night.

The living space is compartmentalized into a series of experiences, planned to potential happenings; beautifully layered, connected, and panned out on a single floor to be explored. The suspended TV panel in the main living area with its distinctive texture and color breaks the space without compromising with the volume. It continues to look and feel massive holding onto the subtle variations and details. So that, it does not become too overbearing.  Another highlight to the living is the two-headed carved wooden fan, tasteful and artistic addition to the living space.  The bar designed to attract and resonate with the users as the beautiful sculpture reflects the lucid, high, ethereal state of enjoyment.

As we go ahead towards the bedrooms, all unique to their style and view. The first one is designed to capture the essence of royalty amidst the plush greens, mountainous textured walls, and beautifully hand-carved details embedded in the furniture designed for the room. The spectacular view from the bed makes you revel in nature with an opening towards the rear deck filled with beautiful Champa trees and the L-shaped window over-looking the internal courtyard between rooms accessed through the living has partial shadows at most times of the day allowing it to be used in the extensive summer days too.

The second bedroom tells no tales but welcomes you to embark on many journeys while sipping on your morning tea with a book by the beautifully designed reversed bay window sitting. The dressing and bookshelf flanking its sides add to the look of the window and room, balancing it out with its utility. The custom-designed bed and side table add to the minimalistic wall paneling. The room is a perfect blend of warm and cool tones, with its ash-white wooden flooring, and warm wood bed with plum-grey headboard. The subtle hues of plum tones add to the warmth of the room.

The last bedroom, our personal favorite, lets us savors the spectacular view of the pool on a warm winter morning from your bed, like no other space in the house. The L-shaped wall-cum-bed panel is exquisite to its space and feel.Even though it’s the smallest bedroom, the level play – both vertically and horizontally gives the room more depth and volume. The color scheme welcomes you warmly into its embrace and soaks in the view before heading off to enjoy the pool.

Each of the baths; is distinctive in its style, both dynamic and experimental in its way. With one key design element catering to both: a.) A visual bliss and b.) A practical solution. Visually, like all the bedrooms, baths have their views to enjoy and direct access to the deck leading to the pool for an easy, hassle-free, and convenient user experience.
