Sachwani Residence | Ground Zero | Surat
The flat occupied the first floor of a multi-dwelling residential apartment in Surat. As one enters, a minimalist pooja area extends a warm welcome. Following the design philosophy that has always marked our approach, we began with a phase of research and intense dialogue with the client to ensure that the flat would tell their story in the best possible way.
The clients wanted a deck in the living room rather than a standing balcony which was provided by the builder. Hence, a deck area was created within the living room itself, which was defined by a wooden pocket. The curved line has become the stylistic signature of the apartment, the undulating movement is also present in the spatial distribution, as the different functions naturally succeed into one another.
The ledge of the pooja area wraps in the kitchen. The clients didn’t want a dedicated dining space and hence, the dining is interlocked within the platform. The ceiling in the living room turns on the TV unit creating a smooth flow. The colour of the grey flooring, the fabrics of the cushions and upholstery, the choice of materials and colours for the paintings, ceilings, and walls are all inspired by the monochromatic theme with a tint of tan shade.
The guest room is opened up by providing glass on one wall to emphasize the spaciousness in the living room. Common basin has been provided in the circulation corridor that is covered in fabric light. A peculiar atmosphere results from the smooth light from it. The surface neutrality enhances the contrast between the cool temperature of wall colour, the rustic feels of tile, and the warm cosiness of wood, providing diversity in the space ambience. A limited and repeated set of light materials were chosen in order to achieve a serene space.
The bed back of the master bedroom is highlighted in bold painting. Aiming for natural texture as a backdrop for the painting and a soft atmosphere to suit the clients, the design is composed of light grey wood flooring, and tinted profile shutter on wardrobe. The result is a room with a serene and calm atmosphere.
To create a sense of spaciousness, a platform bed has been provided in the daughter’s bedroom. An element of greenery was introduced on the bed back to add charm to the space. The entrance to the toilet is covered in panelling along with the play of the vanity mirror. Hues of mauve, whites and greys create a cosy den for their daughter.
The residence is a subdued space of monochromatic tones, essential forms and calm ambience unified through a common belief in simplicity and unfussy elegance. These inspirations have led to a project with a refined and timeless character.
