The Rustic Nook | Studio HC | Bangalore

Set in the heart of Bangalore, this renovated apartment has been transformed into a tranquil retreat for a couple who visit for few weeks each year. From the outset, the vision was to create a harmonious blend of rustic and industrial aesthetics, reflecting the client’s appreciation for raw textures and understated elegance. Thoughtful renovations have breathed new life into the home, balancing functionality with timeless style. This project is a testament to the couple’s vision of a unique, grounded space amidst the urban landscape.

The design narrative is deeply rooted in the textures, materials, and craftsmanship of India, making every element a story of heritage and artisanal finesse.

The entrance door with an industrial charm is crafted from a rustic black-textured metal sheet, it exudes strength and character. The standout feature is its handle, ingeniously designed from a reinforcement rod wrapped in vibrant red leather, adding a striking pop of colour and tactility. Complementing the door, is a sliced bark of wood placed as an accent piece, infuses natural warmth, creating a perfect balance of ruggedness and sophistication.

The foundation of the living room design lies in its flooring, evoking the tactile feel of walking on reclaimed timber floors. Complementing this is the rich texture of the walls, finished in a harmonious mix of beige and charcoal lime plaster. This surface creates a neutral canvas, allowing other elements of the room to shine while maintaining a raw and understated elegance.

One of the standout features of this space is the ceiling, accentuated with antique wooden beams sourced from Karaikudi in the Chettinad region. These beams, with their intricate detailing and aged patina, lend a sense of timelessness, grounding the room in tradition while enhancing its architectural appeal.

Furniture choices are kept muted and earthy, with beige fabrics dominating the palette to ensure a cohesive and calming aesthetic. The center and dining tables, crafted from raw live-edge wooden planks sourced from the forests of Dehradun, celebrate the beauty of imperfection and nature’s artistry.

Plants are thoughtfully integrated throughout the living space, infusing it with a refreshing vibrancy. Their lush greenery softens the raw materials and adds a touch of bohemian whimsy. The dining area further embodies the project’s eclectic charm, featuring three chairs on one side and a raw wooden bench on the other, breaking symmetry to reflect an unpretentious and lived-in vibe. A dining cabinet, painted with artwork, introduces a playful and lively element, ensuring that every corner of the space tells a unique story.

The TV area is designed for ultimate coziness. The console here incorporates antique wooden beams and hammered metal legs, a nod to traditional craftsmanship blended with modern functionality.

The kitchen in this home perfectly complements the boho-rustic theme of the living space, bringing together raw textures and earthy tones to create a warm and functional culinary retreat. The design focuses on simplicity, authenticity, and the organic beauty of natural materials.

The lower cabinets are clad in rustic black stone veneer, exuding a raw, grounded charm while providing durability and practicality. Topping these cabinets is a countertop crafted from raw wood, whose natural grains and textures add warmth and character.

Above, the overhead cabinets are fashioned entirely from raw wood, meticulously cut to size. The clean lines and untreated finish of these cabinets enhance the rustic aesthetic while offering ample storage.

A sliding glass and aluminium partition separates the kitchen from the living space. This thoughtful addition maintains an open, airy feel while allowing the two spaces to function independently. The glass partition enhances connectivity without compromising on privacy, ensuring that the kitchen remains part of the home’s dynamic flow.

Even the smallest details, like the powder room door, are imbued with character. The sliding barn door, crafted from live-edge raw wood, adds a rustic yet functional touch, blending seamlessly into the design language of the space. It transforms functionality into art with its bold eschatological themed wallpaper, making a striking visual statement. A stone boulder washbasin paired with an antique brass-finished faucet adds an earthy, sculptural touch, blending seamlessly with the stone-textured floor and wall tiles.

The master bedroom stands apart as a dramatic departure from the rest of the home’s rustic and earthy tones. Painted entirely in a deep emerald green, including the ceiling, the room exudes a moody, enveloping ambiance that immediately captivates upon entry. The wainscoting panels on the walls add depth and sophistication, creating an interplay of light and shadow that enhances the room’s intimate allure.

Timber furniture anchors the design, its warm, natural tones offering a subtle contrast to the rich green surroundings. Adding a unique cultural dimension are antique Bastar art panels from Chhattisgarh, meticulously integrated into the furniture as accent details. These handcrafted pieces not only elevate the room’s aesthetic but also imbue it with a sense of heritage and artistry.

The master bedroom toilet is a spacious sanctuary, thoughtfully reimagined by extending the existing layout. Echoing the bedroom’s emerald palette, green wall tiles are paired with a forest-inspired floral wallpaper, creating a serene, nature-infused ambiance. The basin counter, crafted from raw wood, beautifully complements the grey stone boulder carved into a sculptural basin. Sustainability is key. No wood was wasted, as even tiny offcuts were repurposed into functional shelves.

Designed to stand apart from the rest of the house, the guest bedroom exudes a serene and uplifting vibe. The space embraces white as its dominant theme, creating a bright, airy ambiance that welcomes natural light and fosters a sense of calm. The choice of white reflects simplicity and sophistication, allowing the room to act as a tranquil retreat for guests.

To prevent the room from feeling overly minimalistic or stark, a vibrant wallpaper graces the walls and wardrobe. This thoughtfully chosen design introduces a playful and lively aesthetic, breaking the monotony of white and adding personality to the space.

This home is more than just a space; it is an experience. It invites you to touch, feel, and connect with the materials, to revel in the imperfections of handcrafted elements, and to bask in the serenity of a design that respects its roots while embracing modern comfort. It is where the past and present coexist, creating an ambiance that is as soulful as it is stylish.
